Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
The Dons Net Café offers a free tax service called VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance). We are open for business every Thursday from 3:00 to 6:00 through tax season. If you are a SBHS alumni or parent you can come in any day from 10:10 to 12:00.
Low-income individuals or families can come to the Dons Net Cafe to file their tax returns and IRS (Internal Revenue Service) certified volunteer students will complete your tax return for free! We can also paper file for people who need to do back-taxes or need to obtain an ITIN (Individual Tax Identificaiton Number) because of residency status. We want everyone who is eligible for refundable (get them even if you have zero tax liability) tax credits such as EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit), Education Credits to get then, and Child-tax credits!
We are proud to say that were the FIRST high school in the nation that was awarded an EFIN (Electronic Filining Identification Number) (allows us to file to Ogden, Utah) by the IRS. In 2010 we were recognized by the Los Angeles IRS as "the best tax site in the nation".
We are so proud to partner with the SB United Way purchases supplies for our VITA, uniforms, and food for our volunteers. We could not have made it without their help. Thank you Paul Didier and every UW member. You help so many in the Santa Barbara community!
Thank You, UNITED WAY!
The picture below is of our very own IRS agent Bob Corera. Bob and Ms. B. started VITA when many thought teenagers could not do it! We are now in our 19th year! We do an average of 600 returns per year. Bob is shown here with alumni Jerry Wei who now does VITA @ Yale! Our students have an amazing 91% scholarship rate!
