Dons Net Cafe Takes Manhattan

For five days in early April, 19 intrepid SBHS students did everything, saw everything, ate everything New York had to offer. Under the supervision of Ms. B., the Dons Net Café’s director and two chaperones, the teens were on the East Coast to compete in Trade Fair Competitions sponsored by Virtual Enterprise International. Their booth at the famed downtown armory was one of more than a hundred manned by students from all over the country and many places throughout the world.

When they were not displaying the products, the students went sightseeing. They went to the top of the Empire State Building, took in the 9-11 Memorial and the Natural History Museum, rode the ferry to the Statue of Liberty, and walked through Central Park, the “lungs” of the city. They hit Times Square and Broadway, where they saw the musical, Rock of Ages. The students also sampled the New York’s famous hot dogs, pizza, and other great food.

Kayla Alcantar, senior, reflects on the trip saying “it was mind blowing how many students are involved with virtual enterprises around the world. It places the Dons Net Café in a larger context. It was also great to see the contrast between high-rise New York and low-rise Santa Barbara. Now I have a new option for where I want to live!”
