“Angels in the Dust” screening to benefit Boikarabelo Orphanage in South Africa
A special screening of the film “Angels in the Dust, at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 14, at Victoria Hall, 33 W. Victoria Street, will benefit the Boikarabelo Orphanage in South Africa. The program is hosted by Dons Net Café of Santa Barbara High School, a program of the Santa Barbara County Education Office Regional Occupational Program.
Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults and can be purchased at the door.
“Angels in the Dust” is the story of Marion Cloete’s work with South African orphans with HIV/AIDS. The affluent Cloete family left their privileged life to start a safe community for impoverished children with AIDS. The film documents their efforts to provide a loving family environment along with educational opportunities.
The orphanage depends on worldwide donations to support more than 500 children. All proceeds from the film screening will go to the orphanage. In addition, students from the Dons Net Café will be selling the Do Ubuntu bracelets made by South African women.
Child Abuse Listening & Mediation (CALM) is partnering with this project by providing the theatre for this event.
As Archbishop Desmond Tutu explained, “One of the sayings in our country is Ubuntu, the essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can’t exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. You can’t be human all by yourself, and when you have this quality, Ubuntu, you are known for your generosity.”
Do Ubuntu, therefore, translates into the concept of “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Dons Net Café is committed to making a difference, one bracelet at a time.
“The Dons Net Café is a Virtual Enterprise course that pioneers business models of responsible social enterprise,” explained County Superintendent of Schools Bill Cirone, whose office coordinates the program. “The Dons Net Café inspires students to create positive social and environmental change through ethical commerce and service, including tax filing services for low-income families, recycling programs, beach and street cleanups, and healthy snack sales,” he said.
